A prolific artist, writer, and teacher, Paul Klee (German, b. Switzerland, 1879–1940) was a distinctive force in 20th-century art. He made playful, inventive works characterized by a highly individual style of abstracted forms and symbols. The design on this stylish silk pocket square celebrates May Picture (1925), a painting on cardboard in the Museum’s collection of modern and contemporary art. This work belongs to Klee’s Magic Square series, derived from his 1914 Tunisian watercolors in which he fractured the landscape into squares.
